Fabric coasters are not only functional but also offer an opportunity to add a touch of personality to your home decor. In this tutorial, we'll walk through the steps of creating your own fabric coasters through machine sewing and embroidery. Whether you're a beginner or seasoned crafter, this project is both enjoyable and practical.
Materials Needed:
1. Fabric scraps in various colors and patterns (at least 5" x 5" in size)
2. Coordinating thread
3. Embroidery thread
4. Sewing machine
5. Embroidery hoop
6. Embroidery needle
7. Fabric scissors
8. Water-soluble fabric marker
9. Pins or clips
10. Iron and ironing board
11. Coaster template (optional)
12. Scrap of batting (3" x 3")
Step 1: Prepare Your Materials
Gather all your materials in one place, making sure your fabric scraps are clean and pressed. Choose fabrics that complement each other well for a cohesive look. I decided I wanted to make a set of 4; one for each member of my family, monogrammed with their first initial. I had winter themed fabric that had a forest theme on it that I purchased from @joann_stores that was on sale. I used a linen fabric I also got from joann's for the top and the winter, forest themed fabric for the bottom (I forgot to take a picture of the blanks before monogramming the linen :).

Step 2: Embroidery Design (Optional)
If you want to add embroidered details to your coasters, now is the time to plan your design. Using a water-soluble fabric marker, lightly sketch your design onto the fabric. Or, if your machine comes with digitized images, load and size the artwork within the boundaries of your fabric square. You will want to keep the artwork or monogramming to under 3" x 3" to allow for about 1/4" seam allowance. Place the fabric in an embroidery hoop with self adhesive stabilizer to keep it taut while you work, then begin to embroider your design.
Step 3: Cut Fabric Pieces
Decide on the size of your coasters and cut out square or circular pieces of fabric accordingly. You can use a coaster template for accuracy, or simply measure and cut with fabric scissors. I did 4" x 4" cuts, but next time I may try 5" x 5" to have a bit more room to manipulate seam allowance.

Step 4: Machine Sewing
After you have (optionally) embroidered your fabric, place the two fabric pieces together, right sides facing each other. Pin them together to prevent shifting during sewing. Using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, stitch around the perimeter of the fabric, leaving a small opening for turning.

Step 5: Clip Corners and Turn Inside Out
Turn the the coaster right side out. Carefully trim the corners of your coaster to reduce bulk. Be careful not to cut into the stitching. Turn the coaster inside out through the opening, using a pencil or chopstick to gently push out the corners for crisp edges. Place the batting square within the coaster.
Step 6: Press and Topstitch
Press the coaster flat with an iron, ensuring the seams are crisp and smooth. Then, topstitch around the perimeter of the coaster, closing the opening as you go. This will also add a decorative touch and reinforce the seams.
Step 7: Finishing Touches
Once your embroidery is complete, give your coaster a final press with the iron to set the stitches and remove any remaining water-soluble marker lines. Trim any loose threads, and your fabric coaster is ready to use or gift!
Creating your own fabric coasters through machine sewing and embroidery is a rewarding and practical DIY project. With a few simple materials and basic sewing skills, you can customize coasters to match your home decor or give as thoughtful handmade gifts. Experiment with different fabrics, colors, and embroidery designs to make each coaster uniquely yours! Enjoy the process and happy crafting!
